Solving Customer Problems: The Ingenuity Behind Our Latest Laser Marking Breakthrough

Ink Laser Bonding on white Delrin

At Laser Flow Labs, we aren’t just here to pull a trigger and mark a part. We’re here to solve problems.

This week, one of our customers came to us with a major problem. They had a critical run of white Delrin (POM) plastic parts that required a high-contrast marking. The catch? The mark had to be achieved without any surface ablation (removal of material) and without the typical scorching or "yellowing" that heat-heavy processes often leave on white plastics.

The Challenge: Marking the "Unmarkable"

White Delrin is notoriously difficult to mark with high contrast. Traditional fiber lasers often just melt or "foam" the surface, creating a subtle, raised white-on-white mark that is hard to read. Conversely, pushing the power too high results in unsightly charring or ablation that compromises the part's smooth surface finish.

Our customer needed a dark, crisp, and permanent mark that felt as smooth as the base material.

The "Aha!" Moment

When standard settings weren't hitting the mark, we didn't just tell the customer "it can't be done." We brought the team together.

During a collaborative brainstorming session, one of our team members suggested pivoting to a Laser Bonding approach. By applying a specialized surface treatment and using our MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) laser systems, we could potentially "embed" a dark mark into the surface of the Delrin without digging into the material itself.

Trial, Error, and Triumph

The process wasn't instant. It took significant trial and error to dial in the perfect synergy between:

  1. The Surface Treatment: Finding the exact application thickness to ensure bonding.

  2. MOPA Laser Settings: Tuning the pulse duration and frequency to provide just enough energy to bond the material without over-heating the delicate white plastic.

After several iterations and rigorous testing, we cracked the code. The result? A stunning, dark, permanent mark that remains flush with the surface—exactly what the customer needed to move their project forward.

Why This Matters for You

This project perfectly illustrates what sets Laser Flow Labs apart. We provide a level of service that treats every marking job as a mission-critical task.

  • Ingenuity: We think outside the "standard settings" box.

  • Teamwork: We leverage the collective experience of our entire team.

  • Speed: We know you're in a hurry, so we work through the R&D quickly to get your parts back on the line.

We are currently continuing our research to see how this bonding process performs on other difficult-to-mark polymers and substrates.

Have a part that’s giving you trouble? Don't settle for "good enough" markings. Bring your toughest challenges to Laser Flow Labs, and let our team find the flow that works for you.
